When I shared Ellen’s birth story with you, I mentioned that my birth team and I sang along to my birth playlist during my labor and delivery. The nurses loved the songs I chose and commented on them throughout my hospital stay. We listened to this playlist many times during my long labor, shuffling the songs for a continuous mix. While I was napping during labor, we turned the music off, but I requested my music again when it came time to push.
If you’re stumped on what you’d like to listen to during your labor and delivery, I am sharing my birth playlist below. I compiled songs that are easy and beautiful to listen to. Since I tend to go inward to draw strength, I didn’t want high tempo songs during labor or the pushing phase. Plus, I figured we could easily change the mood with Spotify radio if I had needed to.
- Jason Mraz – I’m Yours
- Jason Mraz – Lucky
- Israel Kamakawiwo-ole – Over the Rainbow
- Alphaville – Forever Young
- Jack Johnson – Better Together
- James Blunt – You’re Beautiful
- John Mayer – Daughters
- Coldplay – Viva La Vida
- Coldplay – Don’t Panic
- Bruno Mars – Just the Way You Are
- Sade – By Your Side
- Chris Brown – Forever
- Adele – Make You Feel My Love
- Ed Sheeran – Thinking Out Loud
- Sara Bareilles – I Choose You
- John Legend – All of Me
- Johann Sebastian Bach – Air on a G String
- Johann Sebastian Bach – Ave Maria
The classical songs listed at the bottom of the birth playlist are included, because they always take me back to our wedding day. I can’t think of a better reminder of the family that my husband and I are building together.
We still listen to my birth playlist a lot. Especially during the early days of being home, the sounds were soothing and a lovely reminder of welcoming Ellen to our family. I now think of the playlist as Ellen’s soundtrack.
What did you listen to during your labor? I’d love to know!
Somehow, we managed some family maternity self portraits before baby arrived! Would you guess that it took 55 photos to keep these two? Yup, totally true. Between my three guys, someone was constantly rolling his eyes or looking bored or making a face. Obviously, these photos capture us just sitting nicely on our bed like we do every weekend ;) Hence the reason that I couldn’t fathom a newborn session at home. Sigh. It also didn’t help that my husband was sick when we got home from the hospital, followed by both boys being sick. Then my younger son had a tonsillectomy. And did I mention I had a newborn and was sleep deprived? I feel like I’m finally emerging from that haze.
